Alibaba Ads reporting is about inquiries, not clicks. Advertising on Alibaba.com, mainly through Keyword Advertising (Pay for Performance, often called P4P) and related promotion tools, brings buyers to your product pages, and the business result is a qualified inquiry or order. A useful report links ad spend and keyword performance in My Alibaba to inquiry counts, inquiry quality, quotes sent and orders won in your own sales records.

Where does Alibaba Ads data live?

Suppliers manage ads in the My Alibaba back office (also called Alibaba Seller Central for newer accounts), under the Marketing or Promotion section. Data appears in several places, and none of them gives the full picture alone.

Alibaba Ads Reporting: Dashboards That Answer the Right Question — overview
  • Keyword Advertising reports: impressions, clicks, click-through rate, spend and average cost per click by campaign, keyword and product.
  • Data Overview and analytics pages (formerly Data Nest / Data Analytics): store-level traffic, visitors, product views, inquiries and conversion trends.
  • Product analysis: exposure, clicks and inquiries per product, with organic and paid traffic separated.
  • Keyword analysis: search terms buyers used, with industry search popularity indicators.
  • Message Center and the CRM tools: inquiries, response times and buyer details.
  • Orders through Trade Assurance, which record transactions completed on the platform.
Which question should the dashboard answer?

A report that lists every metric answers nothing. Decide the main question first. For most suppliers it is: “For each unit of ad spend, how many qualified inquiries and orders did we get, and from which products and keywords?”

Secondary questions often include which keywords bring buyers from target countries, whether paid traffic converts differently from organic traffic, and how fast the sales team responds to ad-driven inquiries.

Core metrics for Alibaba Ads

Group metrics into three layers so the dashboard reads from cause to result.

Alibaba Ads Reporting: Dashboards That Answer the Right Question — in practice

Delivery

Spend, impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average cost per click, by campaign and keyword. These show whether the ads are reaching buyers and at what price.

Response

Product page visitors from ads, inquiries from ads, cost per inquiry, and inquiry rate (inquiries divided by clicks). Low inquiry rates usually point to product page issues: weak main image, unclear minimum order quantity, missing certifications or prices hidden behind “contact supplier”.

Outcome

Qualified inquiries, quotes sent, samples shipped, orders and order value. These come from your own sales process, so you will need to record the source of each inquiry in a spreadsheet or CRM. Alibaba’s tools alone will not tell you which ad-driven inquiry became a container order three months later.

How do you judge inquiry quality?

Not all inquiries are equal. Many suppliers receive generic messages (“please send price list”), requests from very small buyers, or contacts from other suppliers. Counting them all inflates results.

Define a simple qualification rule with the sales team and tag each inquiry. For example, an inquiry might count as qualified if it:

  • Names a specific product or specification.
  • States a quantity at or above your minimum order quantity.
  • Comes from a country you can ship to and sell in.
  • Includes a company name or verified buyer profile.
  • Receives a reply from the buyer after your first response.

Report cost per qualified inquiry next to cost per inquiry. The gap between them often changes which keywords look profitable.

Keyword and product reports that drive decisions

Keyword reports are where most budget decisions happen. Sort keywords by spend and check each one against inquiries and qualified inquiries. Keywords with high spend and no qualified inquiries over a reasonable period are candidates for lower bids or removal.

Watch for broad terms such as “led light” or “t-shirt” that bring large traffic from buyers comparing prices across hundreds of suppliers. Specific terms such as “IP65 LED flood light 100W” usually bring fewer clicks but more serious buyers. Alibaba’s keyword tool shows search popularity, which helps find specific terms with enough volume.

Product-level reports show which listings convert ad clicks into inquiries. If one product converts much better, consider promoting it more and using its page layout as a template for others.

Building a monthly dashboard

A spreadsheet or BI tool (Google Looker Studio, Power BI) works well, since Alibaba exports reports as files. A practical monthly layout:

  • Summary row: total spend, clicks, inquiries, qualified inquiries, orders, order value, cost per qualified inquiry.
  • Trend chart: the same metrics for the last six to twelve months.
  • Keyword table: top 30 keywords by spend with clicks, inquiries, qualified inquiries and cost per qualified inquiry.
  • Product table: top products by ad spend with inquiry rate.
  • Country table: inquiries and qualified inquiries by buyer country.
  • Response time: average first reply time for ad-driven inquiries, since slow replies waste paid traffic.
  • Notes: changes made during the month, such as new keywords, bid changes or product page updates.
Why do Alibaba numbers and sales numbers disagree?

Timing and attribution cause most gaps. B2B buyers often contact several suppliers, request samples and take weeks or months to place an order. An inquiry from a March ad might become an order in July, so judging ads on same-month orders understates their value.

Some orders also move off-platform after the first contact, through email or direct bank transfer, and never show in Alibaba’s order data. Record the original source of every buyer in your CRM at the first contact, so later orders can be traced back regardless of where they close.

Seasonality matters too. Alibaba’s major promotions, such as the March Expo and September sourcing events, change traffic levels and competition. Compare months with the same period last year where possible.

Turning the report into actions

A dashboard is only useful if it changes what happens next month. End each monthly review with a short list of decisions, each tied to a number in the report. For example: lower bids on three broad keywords with no qualified inquiries in 60 days, rework the main image on the product with the lowest inquiry rate, and add two specific long-tail keywords found in the search term data.

Track whether each action worked in the following month’s report. Over a few cycles, this builds a record of which changes help in your category, which is far more useful than generic advice.

  • Bid changes: compare cost per qualified inquiry before and after.
  • Product page changes: compare inquiry rate from paid clicks.
  • New keywords: check qualified inquiries after a full month.
  • Response time improvements: watch the share of inquiries that reply after your first message.

Keep the list short. Three well-measured changes a month teach more than ten changes made at once, because with ten nobody can tell which one moved the numbers.

Where to start this week

Agree a definition of a qualified inquiry with your sales team, and start tagging every inquiry from ads that way. Export last month’s keyword report from My Alibaba, add a column for qualified inquiries and sort by spend. That single table will show which keywords deserve more budget and which are costing money without bringing real buyers.
