Videos in Google Search

For a video to appear in Google video results it must be on a public page, playable, and discoverable, which usually means VideoObject structured data or a video sitemap.

Requirements

  • The video file must be crawlable, not blocked in robots.txt.
  • A supported format, with a stable URL.
  • A thumbnail Google can fetch.
  • Required VideoObject properties: name, description, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate.
  • Prominent placement on the page, a video buried below unrelated content may be ignored.

Key moments

Timestamps that let users jump to a section. Provide them with Clip structured data, or with SeekToAction so Google can derive them from your description timestamps.

Alien Road recommends: give every video its own page with real text around it. A page containing only an embed has almost nothing to rank for. Transcript, summary and headings make the page useful to people who will not press play, which is most of them.
