Google AI Max helps e-commerce brands mainly by finding long-tail product searches that keyword lists miss, matching ad text to those searches and landing shoppers on the most relevant category or product page. It is an opt-in feature set for standard Search campaigns. Stores with large catalogues, good category pages and clean conversion values benefit most; small single-product stores usually see less gain.

How does AI Max fit into an e-commerce account?

Most online stores run a mix of Shopping or Performance Max campaigns for product listings and Search campaigns for text ads. AI Max sits on the Search side. It adds broad, keywordless matching based on your site and ads, generated headlines and descriptions, and final URL expansion to other pages on your domain.

Google AI Max for E-commerce Brands: Practical Use Cases — overview

Because Shopping and Performance Max already use your product feed to match queries, the question is what AI Max adds. The answer is text ads that speak to the query directly, appearing alongside product listings, and landing on category pages that may suit browsing shoppers better than a single product.

Use case 1: How does AI Max capture long-tail product searches?

Shoppers search with combinations of attributes: material, size, colour, style, use, location. A home textile store might get searches like ‘linen duvet cover king size sage green’ or ‘cotton bath towels quick dry hotel quality’. No team can write keywords for every combination.

AI Max reads the store’s category and product pages and matches queries that fit them. Generated headlines can mirror the query, and URL expansion can send the click to the sage green linen category instead of the general bedding page. This is where many stores see new conversions, especially when category pages are well built.

Use case 2: Can AI Max improve category landing pages?

Final URL expansion depends on the quality of your pages. If your site has strong category pages with clear titles, filters and helpful text, AI Max has good destinations to choose from. If most categories are thin lists with no description, results will be weaker.

  • Give each category a clear H1 and a short introduction that names the attributes it covers.
  • Make filtered views for popular combinations into indexable pages with their own URLs where it makes sense.
  • Exclude pages that should never receive ad traffic: blog archives, careers, account pages, out-of-season collections.
  • Check mobile speed on top categories; Core Web Vitals targets such as LCP under 2.5 seconds are a useful benchmark.

New searches appear around seasons, events and trends before anyone adds keywords for them. AI Max can match these earlier, as long as your site already has relevant pages. A gift shop that publishes a Mother’s Day gift guide page a few weeks ahead gives AI Max a destination for queries such as ‘gifts for mum who loves gardening’.

After the season, review which new queries converted and add the best as keywords or new ad groups for next year. This turns AI Max into a research tool as well as a traffic source.

Use case 4: Better text ads for broad categories

Stores often run one generic ad per category. Text customisation produces headlines closer to each search. If brand rules are strict, you can switch text customisation off and keep matching and URL expansion, or review generated assets regularly and remove ones that do not fit.

Use case 5: Supporting market expansion

Stores that sell into several countries often have keyword lists built for their home market only. When a Turkish store opens German or English pages, AI Max can match local-language searches to those pages without a full keyword build for each market. The localised pages must be genuinely translated and reviewed, with correct prices, currency and shipping information for the country. Run each market as its own campaign, so budgets and results stay separate and you can see which countries respond.

Add location settings and language targeting carefully. AI Max uses your site as a signal, so clear country and language structure, such as /de/ folders with hreflang tags, helps it choose the right landing page for each shopper.

What should stores watch out for?
  • Overlap with Performance Max and Shopping: check total account results, not just campaign figures.
  • Brand query inflation: use brand settings so brand searches do not make AI Max look better than it is.
  • Out-of-stock pages: URL expansion may send traffic to sold-out products; keep stock status accurate and exclude dead pages.
  • Price and promotion claims in generated text: make sure they match the live site.
  • Conversion values: use real order values, ideally net of returns where possible, so bidding is not misled.

How Alien Road applies Google AI Max for e-commerce clients

In a typical engagement we start with a joint review of the Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns to understand how queries are split today. We check conversion values, the Merchant Center feed and the quality of the top 50 category pages, since AI Max relies on them.

Setup usually begins with one non-brand Search campaign covering a large category. We add URL exclusions, brand settings and negative keyword lists, and run a 50/50 experiment for four to six weeks. Where category pages are weak, we brief content updates in parallel.

Reporting compares the experiment arms on revenue, ROAS and new customer share, lists the best new query themes and landing pages and checks total account results for overlap. New themes feed back into the keyword plan and the content plan for the site.

Where to start this week

List your ten highest-revenue categories and open each page on mobile. Note which have a clear heading, an introduction and fast loading, and which do not. Those notes predict where AI Max will send traffic successfully.

Then pull the last 90 days of search terms for your main Search campaign and count converting queries with three or more attributes. A high count suggests real long-tail demand, which is the strongest reason to test AI Max in your store.
