Google AI Max for Search campaigns is a feature set that lets Google’s AI expand which queries trigger your ads, rewrite ad text and choose landing pages. The main risks are irrelevant matching, off-brand copy and traffic sent to the wrong page. Set brand controls, URL rules, negatives and a measurement baseline before switching it on.
Google introduced AI Max as an opt-in setting inside Search campaigns rather than a new campaign type. That matters for governance: the same campaign you have run for years can start behaving differently once a few toggles change. Advertisers who set rules first tend to get the benefit without the surprises.

What does AI Max change in a Search campaign?
AI Max bundles several capabilities. Search term matching uses your keywords, ads and landing pages to find additional queries, similar in spirit to broad match and keywordless targeting. Text customization generates headlines and descriptions based on your site and existing assets. Final URL expansion lets Google send a user to a different page on your site when it judges that page more relevant.
It also brings controls. At the time of writing these include brand inclusions and exclusions, URL inclusions and exclusions, locations of interest at ad group level, and reporting that shows which queries and URLs came from the expansion. Feature names and placement in the interface change, so confirm in your account under the campaign settings.
Risk 1: matching drift
Expanded matching is the biggest change. A law firm bidding on “employment lawyer” can start appearing for “employment law course” or “jobs at law firms”. Volume rises, relevance falls, and the account looks healthy on clicks while leads stay flat.

The guardrail is a disciplined search terms routine. Review the search terms report weekly for the first month, filtered to queries attributed to AI Max, and add negatives at campaign or list level. Shared negative lists for job seekers, free resources and education queries cover many accounts.
Risk 2: copy you would not have written
Text customization writes ad text from your landing pages. If a page mentions a discount that ended last month, or a service you only offer in one city, the generated copy can repeat it. In regulated sectors such as finance, health or legal services, a generated claim can create a compliance problem.
- Remove outdated offers and region-specific claims from the pages Google reads.
- Pin headlines that must appear, such as licensing statements, where your policies require them.
- Review the asset report regularly and remove generated assets that do not fit.
- If your sector needs pre-approval for every ad, keep text customization off and use only matching.
Risk 3: the wrong landing page
Final URL expansion can send a query to a blog post instead of a service page, or to a page with no form. Conversion rate drops and the cause is hard to see unless you look at the landing page report.
Use URL exclusions for blog, careers, legal and support sections. If the site has many thin or old pages, clean up before testing. The model chooses from what exists, and a messy site gives it poor options.
What governance rules should be in place before launch?
Write these down and agree them with whoever owns the budget. A shared document prevents the slow drift where each person changes a setting without telling the others.
- Scope: which campaigns are allowed to test AI Max, and which stay untouched as a control.
- Brand rules: brand inclusions for brand campaigns, brand exclusions where competitor or own-brand traffic should not appear.
- URL rules: inclusions and exclusions for final URL expansion.
- Negatives: shared lists reviewed weekly during the test period.
- Conversion quality: only primary conversions that reflect real value, such as qualified leads or purchases, are used for bidding.
- Budget limit: maximum daily spend increase allowed during the test.
- Review cadence: who checks search terms, assets and landing pages, and how often.
- Exit criteria: the result that ends the test, written in advance.
What are the limits of AI Max?
AI Max cannot fix weak conversion tracking. If the account counts page views or button clicks as conversions, the system will find more of those, not more customers. Offline conversion imports or enhanced conversions for leads give it better signals.
It also needs volume. Low-budget campaigns with a handful of conversions a month give the model little to learn from, and results can swing week to week. And reporting, while better than early automated formats, does not give you every detail of why a query matched.
Finally, AI Max does not replace account structure. Clear ad groups, distinct landing pages per service and sensible budgets still decide how much useful room the automation has. An account with one ad group covering ten services will give the model a confusing picture, and the expansions will reflect that confusion. Treat AI Max as a layer on top of a clean campaign, not as a shortcut around building one.
How Alien Road applies Google AI Max
In a typical engagement, discovery means auditing the account before touching AI Max: conversion actions and their values, search term quality over the past ninety days, landing page performance and existing negative lists. Accounts with tracking problems get those fixed first.
Setup follows the governance list above. We choose one or two campaigns with enough conversion volume, keep comparable campaigns unchanged, and apply brand and URL rules plus shared negatives. Where possible we use Google’s experiments feature so the comparison is fair rather than a before-and-after guess.
Measurement runs on cost per qualified lead or return on ad spend, not clicks. Weekly reports show new queries added by expansion, negatives applied, generated assets removed and landing pages chosen. After the test window, the client gets a plain recommendation: expand, adjust or switch off.
Where to start this week
Open the search terms report for your strongest Search campaign and read the last thirty days. If you already see irrelevant queries, fix negatives and tracking before any test. If the report is clean and conversions are reliable, write the governance document, set up an experiment on that one campaign and agree the exit criteria before you press save.
