Google AI Max for Search campaigns is a feature suite that adds broader query matching, automatically generated ad text and landing page selection to existing Search campaigns. It makes sense when your account has reliable conversion data and keyword coverage that misses relevant searches. Traditional keyword-led Search campaigns remain better when you need tight control over queries, messaging or landing pages, for example in regulated sectors.
Google introduced AI Max as a one-click option inside Search campaigns rather than a new campaign type. That design means you can test it on part of an account without rebuilding structure, which makes the switch decision easier to make on evidence.

What does AI Max change in a Search campaign?
- Search term matching: uses your keywords, ads and landing pages to find relevant queries beyond your current keyword list, similar in spirit to broad match.
- Text customisation: generates headlines and descriptions based on your site, ads and keywords, formerly known as automatically created assets.
- Final URL expansion: sends users to the landing page on your site that Google judges most relevant to the query.
- Controls: brand inclusions and exclusions, location of interest settings at ad group level, and URL inclusions or exclusions.
Reporting includes search terms and the matched assets, and Google has added AI Max match type labels in reports, which helps you see what the feature added compared with your existing keywords. Check current documentation, since controls are being extended over time.
Which accounts benefit from AI Max?
AI Max relies on signals. Accounts with steady conversion volume, accurate conversion values and clear landing pages give the system enough to work with. Accounts with thin data or poorly defined conversions tend to see the broader matching spend on loosely related searches.
- Good fit: ecommerce or lead generation accounts with consistent conversions each week and value-based bidding.
- Good fit: sites with many well-built landing pages, where URL expansion can find better matches.
- Good fit: accounts where search term reports show you missing obvious query variations.
- Poor fit: regulated industries where ad text must be approved word for word.
- Poor fit: small budgets where a few irrelevant clicks distort results.
- Poor fit: sites with outdated or thin pages that URL expansion might choose.
What are the risks of switching on AI Max?
Generated ad text may make claims you would not approve, such as implying a discount that does not apply to every product. URL expansion may send traffic to blog posts, career pages or old offers. Broader matching may overlap with other campaigns, including Performance Max, and blur which campaign deserves credit.

Controls to set before testing
- Add URL exclusions for pages that should never receive ad traffic.
- Review brand settings so competitor or unrelated brand queries are not matched.
- Check that site content does not contain outdated offers that text customisation could reuse.
- Keep account-level negative keywords current.
- Define the success metric in advance: conversion value or cost per qualified lead, not clicks.
How do you test AI Max against your current setup?
Use Google Ads experiments where available, which split traffic between a control campaign and a trial with AI Max enabled. Run the test long enough to cover normal weekly cycles and enough conversions to compare, which for many accounts means several weeks. Avoid making other major changes during the test.
Review the search terms tab regularly during the trial. Separate queries your keywords already covered from new ones AI Max found, and judge the new ones on conversion quality, not volume. For lead businesses, import offline outcomes so a cheap but unqualified lead does not look like a win.
When should you not switch?
If your account depends on exact messaging for legal reasons, if conversion tracking is unreliable, or if you have just launched and have little data, keep traditional match types and handwritten ads for now. The feature is not a cure for weak foundations. Fix tracking and landing pages first, then test.
How Alien Road applies Google AI Max
In a typical engagement, discovery reviews conversion setup, search term reports and landing page inventory to judge whether the account is ready. The team also checks overlap with Performance Max and brand campaigns, since that affects how results should be read.
Setup prepares URL exclusions, brand controls and negatives, then launches AI Max on one or two campaigns through an experiment rather than account-wide. Ad text generated during the test is reviewed weekly against client-approved claims.
Measurement compares conversion value, cost per qualified conversion and search term quality between control and trial. The report shows which new queries AI Max found, what they delivered and whether the trial should expand, be adjusted or be switched off.
How does AI Max interact with Performance Max and brand campaigns?
Accounts rarely run one campaign type alone. When a Search campaign with AI Max and a Performance Max campaign could both serve the same query, Google applies its own prioritisation rules, which have changed over time; at the time of writing, Google states that an exact match to a Search keyword generally takes priority. Broader AI Max matching can therefore shift which campaign wins for many queries.
Brand campaigns need special care. If AI Max is enabled on a non-brand campaign, check brand exclusions so it does not start buying your own brand terms at non-brand bids. Watch the search terms reports of all campaigns during the test, not only the one with AI Max. A rise in its conversions paired with a fall elsewhere may mean traffic moved rather than grew, and the experiment should be judged on the total account result.
Where to start this week
Open the search terms report for your largest Search campaign over the last ninety days and look for relevant queries you did not target. If you find many, AI Max may help. If most terms are already covered, the gain may be small.
- Audit conversion goals and values.
- Build a URL exclusion list.
- Set up an experiment on one campaign.
- Write down the success metric before you start.
Switch based on the experiment, not on a default recommendation in the interface.
