Google AI Max for Search campaigns adds AI-driven query matching, text customisation and final URL expansion to existing Search campaigns. In client work, we never switch it on across an account at once. We audit tracking and structure first, run it as a controlled experiment on chosen campaigns, set brand, location and URL controls, review every generated asset and report results against a clear baseline.

What is AI Max, in brief?

AI Max is a feature set for Google Ads Search campaigns, introduced as a one-click option. It uses keywords, ads and landing page content to find additional relevant searches, can generate or adapt headlines and descriptions for each query, and can choose the best landing page on the site for a given search. It also brings controls such as brand inclusions and exclusions, location of interest at ad group level and URL inclusion or exclusion rules, plus reports that show which search terms and assets AI Max produced.

How Alien Road Uses Google AI Max in Client Search Campaigns — overview

Google presents it as a way to get broader reach without moving to Performance Max. For advertisers, the trade-off is familiar: more reach and automation in return for some loss of direct control.

How Alien Road applies Google AI Max: the process

The steps below follow a typical client engagement in our Google Ads work. Each step has a clear output, so the client can see where the decision came from.

Step 1: account audit

AI Max depends on signals, so we start with them.

How Alien Road Uses Google AI Max in Client Search Campaigns — in practice
  • Conversion tracking: are primary conversions real business outcomes, such as purchases, qualified leads or calls of a minimum length?
  • Values: are conversion values sent, so Smart Bidding can favour higher-value results?
  • Structure: are campaigns organised by product or service with clear landing pages?
  • Search terms: how much spend already goes to irrelevant queries?
  • Landing pages: which pages on the site should never receive ad traffic?

The audit output is a short list of fixes. If conversion tracking is weak, AI Max waits until it is fixed.

Step 2: choosing test campaigns

Not every campaign is a good candidate. We prefer campaigns with steady conversion history, enough budget to learn and a site with relevant pages for related queries. Brand campaigns usually stay out of the first test, and so do campaigns in sensitive categories where generated copy carries policy risk.

Step 3: setting up the experiment

We use Google Ads experiments where available, so part of the traffic runs with AI Max and part runs without it. That gives a fair comparison under the same conditions. Before launch we:

  • add URL exclusions for careers pages, blog archives, outdated offers and legal pages;
  • set brand exclusions or inclusions based on the client’s competitive policy;
  • check location settings, especially for local service businesses;
  • apply shared negative keyword lists;
  • add text guidelines where available, such as terms to avoid.

Step 4: asset review

Generated headlines and descriptions are reviewed during the first days and then weekly. We check for factual accuracy, such as prices, guarantees and delivery promises, for brand tone and for policy compliance. Assets that make claims the client cannot support are removed immediately.

Step 5: search term review

The AI Max search terms report shows which new queries it found. Each week, we sort them into useful, borderline and irrelevant. Irrelevant ones become negatives; useful ones may become new keywords in other campaigns too.

How do we judge the results?

We agree success criteria before the test starts, so nobody moves the goalposts.

  • Primary metric: cost per acquisition or return on ad spend, depending on the account goal.
  • Volume: conversions gained, not just clicks.
  • Quality: lead quality feedback from the client’s sales team, or order value for e-commerce.
  • Waste: share of spend on irrelevant search terms.
  • Landing pages: conversion rate on pages chosen by final URL expansion.

Tests usually run for four to six weeks. A result is only called a win if it holds on the primary metric and quality does not fall.

When we switch it off

If AI Max does not beat the control, or if lead quality drops, we turn it off and keep what we learned, such as new keyword ideas. That outcome is reported as clearly as a win.

What do clients see in reporting?

During the test, clients get a weekly note with the main metrics for both arms, examples of new search terms and any assets removed. After the test, a summary explains the result, the recommendation and the next campaign to test. Monthly reporting then folds AI Max into the regular account report, with search term waste tracked as a standing metric.

What common pitfalls do we watch for?
  • Turning on AI Max without URL exclusions, so ads land on blog posts or job listings.
  • Letting generated copy promise discounts or guarantees the business does not offer.
  • Judging results after one week, before bidding has settled.
  • Ignoring location settings, which can bring clicks from outside the service area.
  • Reading higher conversion volume as success when cost per conversion rose too much.
How does AI Max fit with the rest of the account?

AI Max does not live alone. Broader matching can overlap with other Search campaigns, Performance Max or Shopping, and the same query may be eligible in several places. We check the search terms report across campaigns for overlap and keep campaign roles clear: brand terms in brand campaigns, generic discovery where AI Max runs, exact high-intent terms in tightly managed ad groups.

Budget pacing matters too. If AI Max finds more traffic, the campaign may hit its daily budget earlier in the day. We watch impression share lost to budget during the test and decide with the client whether to raise the budget or narrow the scope.

Where to start this week

If you manage your own Google Ads account, review your conversion actions first and make sure the primary ones represent real business outcomes. Then list the pages on your site that should never receive ad traffic.

With those two items done, pick one stable Search campaign and set up an AI Max experiment with a fixed four-week test window and success criteria written down in advance. Review search terms and generated assets every week while it runs.
